The Better Identity Coalition Commends Congress for Including Dedicated Cybersecurity Funding in COVID-19 Relief Package.

Washington, March 10, 2021– The following statement can be attributed to Jeremy Grant, Coordinator for the Better Identity Coalition:

“The pandemic exposed the inadequacies of our digital identity infrastructure, leading to dozens of critical government services being shut down and enabling cybercriminals to exploit weak identity systems to steal billions of dollars. Meanwhile many Americans who need assistance the most have been unable to obtain it, due to an inability to easily prove their identity online.

As we wrote in our multi-association letter with the Cybersecurity Coalition, CompTIA, and the Alliance for Digital Innovation, a ‘direct investment in cybersecurity shared services’ used by ‘government agencies and/or critical infrastructure can bolster our defenses,’ especially in the area of a ‘robust digital identity infrastructure.’ And we need to continue approaching cybersecurity with identity as a priority.

We’re thrilled that Congress recognized the importance of investing in cybersecurity and technology, and urge the Administration to use some of these dollars to create better identity infrastructure that can help government and industry alike deliver more secure, innovative digital services.”
